Today’s judgment is a landmark moment for Jazmine, her family and for every survivor who has watched this case wondering whether the criminal justice system truly understands the lifechanging harm caused by rape. While no court can undo the harm that has been inflicted, today's decision will help bolster public confidence in the criminal justice system and send a clear and encouraging message to every survivor deciding whether it is safe to come forward.
It has been an honour for Proudmans to represent and support Jazmine throughout this legal process pro bono. As a trauma-informed law firm founded to represent women and girls who have experienced abuse, we know that justice is about ensuring survivors are heard, believed and treated with dignity. Jazmine has shown extraordinary courage in pursuing justice despite the immense personal cost.

This case has also exposed wider questions about how the justice system responds to sexual violence, particularly against women and girls. Those questions do not end with today's judgment. Proudmans will continue to stand alongside survivors, challenge systemic injustice and campaign for legal reform so that every victim can have confidence that the law will reflect their experiences and recognise both the seriousness of these offences and the lifelong impact they have on those who endure them.
One case cannot change a system, but the opportunity this case offers to make a fresh start, genuinely putting victims at the centre of our system of justice. It must not be wasted.
Dr Charlotte Proudman, founder of Proudmans, is an award-winning barrister. We are committed to representing survivors of abuse and ensuring justice is achieved.
