Proudmans acts for Apsana Begum MP, a domestic abuse victim following media harassment

Proudmans acts for Apsana Begum MP in relation to targeted and unjustified attacks by the media. Ms Begum is a survivor of domestic abuse who was acquitted following a vexatious prosecution in 2021, with the matter conclusively closed and no findings of wrongdoing against her.

The re-circulation of closed allegations and the reframing of lawful housing arrangements as alleged misconduct raise serious concerns about fairness, accuracy and proportionality in reporting, particularly where such coverage exposes a survivor to renewed harm.

Dr Charlotte Proudman previously represented Ms Begum when her former husband was expelled from the Labour Party following findings relating to his treatment of her over a prolonged period. That background forms an essential part of the context in which these publications must be understood.

Proudmans specialises in representing survivors of domestic abuse, including cases involving post-separation abuse and harassment. We are instructed to protect Ms Begum’s legal rights, safety and dignity, and to challenge conduct which risks perpetuating abuse. Media freedom carries corresponding legal and ethical responsibilities, particularly where reporting choices increase risk to a survivor’s wellbeing and security.

As Dr Charlotte Proudman, barrister and founder of Proudmans, said: “Apsana Begum MP was acquitted after a vexatious trial in 2021 with the matter being closed and no wrongdoing on her part. We consider this harassment of her to be an abuse of power which highlights the unjust treatment she continues to have to endure as a survivor of ongoing domestic abuse and the first hijab-wearing MP.”
