Dr Charlotte Proudman, founder of Proudmans and barrister, joined Singaporean MP He Ting Ru at Union Book Co to discuss her book, He Said She Said: Truth, Trauma and the Struggle for Justice in Family Court.

The event on 4th October closed the inaugural Singapore Indie Bookshop Day 2026.

In conversation with He Ting Ru, who is fighting for women's equality and empowering women in Singapore, Dr Proudman spoke about the push for reform in England and Wales. She also shared her own experiences of misogyny as a female barrister in a male-dominated legal world.

He Said She Said draws on Dr Proudman's experience representing women in the family courts. It exposes a legal system failing women who come to the court for safety for them and their children.

Survivors of abuse face systemic minimisation of domestic abuse and a deeply entrenched gender bias in the family justice system.

While in Singapore, Dr Proudman met activists working in the family court space who described problems in the family courts that mirror those in England and Wales.

In England and Wales, recent transparency orders have started to open the courts up to scrutiny, which survivors and children need if their experiences are going to be heard. However, there is no transparency in the family courts in Singapore, which makes it harder to challenge inequalities and injustice.

Dr Proudman is a pioneer of trauma-informed practice, particularly in her representation of survivors of domestic and sexual violence. This approach is central to our work at Proudmans, and it was a privilege to share it with legal professionals and activists in Singapore.

Survivors face the same barriers in courts around the world, and Proudmans is committed to taking this message beyond our own courts. Dr Proudman looks forward to returning to give a masterclass for family lawyers and practitioners on representing survivors and children in the family courts.

Thank you to He Ting Ru for hosting us, to Union Book Co, and to everyone who came to the event. It was a privilege to share our work at Proudmans with those fighting for family court justice reform in Singapore.
