Dr Charlotte Proudman speaking at the Harper’s Bazaar International Women’s Day Gala 2026, in conversation with playwright and former human rights lawyer Suzie Miller and writer and comedian Deborah Frances-White. The panel was chaired by Frances Hedges, Deputy Editor of Harper’s Bazaar, and explored the future of gender equality in the wake of the Epstein scandal and the role of women challenging power within the law.
Charlotte reflected on her book He Said, She Said and the realities women face when speaking out about abuse and inequality within the legal profession. She discussed how, in 2015, she publicly called out a male solicitor twice her age for sending her sexually inappropriate messages on LinkedIn, long before #MeToo and at a time when speaking out was widely viewed as “divisive”. Speaking out sparked a global conversation but also fierce backlash, exposing how entrenched the “boys’ club” culture remained within the profession.
A decade on, those dynamics continue to surface. Charlotte spoke about how she was later wrongly prosecuted by the Bar Standards Board for describing a judge’s conduct as reflective of a “boys’ club” — a judge who was himself a member of the Garrick Club, a male-only private club long associated with the legal establishment.
That experience helped shape Charlotte’s work and the creation of Proudmans, a trauma-informed family law firm committed to representing survivors and challenging structural inequality within the justice system. We provide exceptional representation to parents and children in family courts.
